Wilderness Bisate Reserve
About Wilderness Bisate Reserve
Wilderness Bisate Reserve occupies a site within a reforestation project adjacent to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The architecture consists of six spherical villas constructed from volcanic stone and thatch, each featuring private decks that offer views of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes. Interiors are equipped with en-suite bathrooms, fireplaces, and locally crafted furniture. The primary activity for guests is tracking mountain gorillas. These expeditions depart early each morning with park guides to reach troop locations within the forest. Beyond tracking, the lodge provides guided nature walks to identify endemic bird species and golden monkeys. Guests may also participate in the ongoing tree-planting initiative to support the local habitat. Meals are prepared using Rwandan ingredients sourced from nearby communities, emphasizing seasonal produce. The lodge operates with a focus on conservation through high-value, low-impact tourism. All infrastructure reflects the environmental conditions of the Virunga Massif, maintaining a connection to the high-altitude landscape. Access is provided via road transfer from Kigali, approximately a three-hour drive, or by helicopter.
Why we like it
Wilderness Bisate Reserve occupies a unique position on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, offering direct access to gorilla trekking activities. Its six villas feature a distinct architectural style inspired by Rwandan culture, while the reforestation project successfully integrates luxury hospitality with critical conservation efforts for local mountain gorilla populations.
