Usangu Expedition Camp
About Usangu Expedition Camp
Usangu Expedition Camp is a pioneering, conservation-led retreat situated in the remote Usangu Wetlands of Ruaha National Park, Tanzania. As the first and only photographic safari camp in this wild southern frontier, it offers a rare opportunity to explore a vast, previously inaccessible wilderness where the Great Ruaha River begins its journey. The camp operates seasonally from June to November, focusing on "citizen science" where guests actively participate in biodiversity monitoring alongside researchers from the Douglas Bell Eco Research Station. The accommodation is designed for the modern adventurer, featuring six spacious guest tents set on raised wooden decks with sweeping views of the floodplains. Each tent is equipped with a private "star cube"—a netted sleeping area that allows for an immersive night under the African sky—and en-suite bathrooms with plumbed hot water. The experience is defined by its traditional, low-impact feel, with meals often prepared over an open fire and shared under the stars, fostering a deep connection to the surrounding miombo woodlands and wetlands.
Why we like it
It offers an authentic "frontier" experience where you can participate in actual conservation research in a corner of Ruaha that few travelers ever see.
