Lodge Description
Changa Safari Camp – an unspoilt piece of paradise
Perfectly set in a remote and secluded part of the Matusadona National Park located in the heart of Lake Kariba. Boasting nearly 4km of lakeshore frontage, Changa Safari Camp offers a unique and authentic safari experience. There are a varied range of exciting and relaxing activities to choose from including both morning and afternoon game drives, fishing for the famed fighting Tiger fish and stunning game walks on the concession with an experienced and knowledgeable guide.
Lapped by the waters of Lake Kariba, shaded by Mopane woodland and hidden from the world, Changa Safari Camp is an oasis of tranquility and an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Changa has been designed to blend in with the environment using natural materials. The camp furniture has been built using Zimbabwe’s finest teak and the bar has been fashioned around the hull of an old boat.
We have 6 standard tents which accommodate 2 people. The camp also has two sets of interconnecting family tents, which allow children to move freely between their tent and their parents’ in complete safety and privacy.
Each one of the eight luxury tents has been created to reflect the environment, providing you with an authentic bush experience. The unique landscape surrounding Changa, provides each tent with its own breathtaking view of the unspoilt environment. Discreetly positioned in the front facing trees, are small sprinklers that may be turned on, inviting a flurry of feathers to your doorstep where you can watch the colorful birdlife darting in and out the spray.
All tents are a classic safari olive canvas and have been mosquito proofed with specialized netting, allowing you to comfortably fall asleep with a gentle breeze and the distant call of the wild.
Each tent has been individually and tastefully decorated with an East African influence and come with:
• An open netted front with views from both the bed and bathroom
• Private deck with a seating area and a hammock under the trees
• Bathroom vanity with double basins, separate toilet and shower and luxury guest amenities
• Outdoor bathtub and shower, with candles and decorative tiles
• Dressing table, with locally made mirrors and ample cupboard space
• Universal plug points
• Chilled water in a flask with glasses
• Lockable safety deposit bag for all your valuables
• Hairdryers on request at check in
There are several activities at Changa Safari Camp, providing guests with a choice of how they wish to spend their day. From early morning game walks, fishing for the famed fighting tiger fish and photographing wildlife whilst on a game drive – these are just a few of the adventures on offer.
For those that want to take some time out to relax, you do not have to venture too far from camp to see wildlife as there are regular visitors including elephants, bush babies, monkeys, squirrels and on the rare occasion, a resident leopard.
Going on safari is an exciting prospect and, for many, when the dust has been wiped off your boots and the hat hung up till next time, there is no greater pleasure than poring over the special moments you’ve captured on camera. You can now book an experienced photographer, Neil to join you on safari at Changa. No matter what your skill level, Neil will provide you with a better understanding and appreciation of your wild subjects, and you will come away from the experience vastly enriched, not just with magical memories, but with a renewed passion for wildlife, nature and the art of photography.
Game Walks
One of the best ways to experience and feel a part of the African bush. Our professional guides have expert knowledge of the area and accompanied by them, you can be introduced to the Matusadona National Park in a completely different way. Walks are best in the early mornings or late afternoons when it is not too hot. We recommend wearing neutral or “bush” coloured clothing and as the terrain can be uneven and rocky, comfortable walking shoes and socks are required.
Game Drives
Changa Safari Camp is situated in a private concession area within the famed Matusadona National Park and is a stunning combination of flat plains and rugged mountain country. The north of the park is within the Mopane woodlands ecoregion and the south within miombo woodlands ecoregion.
Our open game vehicles are the perfect way to discover the area, providing a fantastic opportunity to see a variety of game, including lion, cheetah and elephant whilst taking in the beautiful scenery. Occasionally you may come across some fresh tracks on a drive so wear comfortable shoes just in case you choose to track the animal for a short while! There are early morning and afternoon game drives available.
Boat Cruises
Relax and enjoy one of Lake Kariba’s most popular activities and a favourite at Changa. If you are interested in birding, then our boat cruise is perfect for you as it will provide a different vantage point to get up close and personal to numerous species of birds. Whilst drifting along the banks of the lake, you will also encounter some great wildlife sightings in their peaceful surroundings.
What better way to end your day in Kariba, than listening to the sounds of hippo around you and witnessing an unforgettable sunset on the lake.
Fine Dining
Changa Safari Camp’s cuisine will certainly be a highlight of your stay. Using only fresh ingredients, the taste and presentation of each dish, will leave you looking forward to the next meal. Breakfast and lunch are both served al fresco on the main elevated deck either under the shaded thatched open air dining room or under the Zig-zag terminalia tree overlooking the private beach and shoreline. We serve an afternoon tea with a selection of teas, local coffee and a sweet treat. A candle-lit dinner will be served with the beat of the drum at 7.30pm at a different location each night of your stay.
Should you have any dietary requirements please do let us know at the time of your booking and we would be happy to accommodate these.
Rustic Elegance
The open-air lounge area is comfortably furnished with inviting leather chairs and sofas, shaded by a thatch roof with bursts of colour from the individually designed mosaic tiles. It is a lovely area where you can relax on your own, taking in the beautiful surroundings, or to socialize with others and share stories about your day. Wi-Fi is available in this area along with a central charging station.
Edewell and Marksen warmly invite you to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink at any time in the bar which is well stocked with a wide range of soft drinks, beers, wines, spirits and a wine list including a selection of South African wines.
